Motivation: Wireless communication for vehicles is one of the most promising technology to enforce the safety of roads and to drastically reduce the number of accidents. ISMB has developed a prototype of connected bicycle that can communicate with cars and warn drivers and the bike rider about possible collision or other useful information. This prototype has been developed in the framework of a regional project and is now ready to face an on-going European project.

Objective: The aim of the thesis is to add one or more accelerometer (and/or other useful sensors) to the connected bicycle with the aim of providing more data and enhance the safety of the rider. For example, information about the dynamics of the bicycle, is not only useful for road administrations for planning, but also it can be shared with the surrounding vehicles in order to prevent accidents.

In the first part of the thesis, the student will make a survey to identify the best cost-effective hardware to be mounted on the connected bicycle according to the use cases. Then the candidate should deploy it on the prototype, collect experimental data and start the implementation of specific use cases defined in the work team. This thesis will allow candidates to work on a real prototype being currently used in one of the large H2020 European project about autonomous driving.
